Invermere’s Transportation Master Plan

We have updated the Transportation Master Plan (TMP) to shape the future of all modes of transportation in Invermere and respond to ongoing growth and development. A previous comprehensive Transportation Study was completed in 2006. The update includes a more wholistic transportation approach, considering recommendations outlined in the Joint Active Transportation Plan (JATP) which was developed in partnership with the Shuswap Band in 2021. The JATP can be accessed here.

Transportation is an essential part of everyday life, affecting our community’s health, environment, and economy. An efficient transportation network allows people and goods to safely move in and around Invermere.

Why are we updating the Transportation Study?

To address increasing pressures on the transportation network the plan provides updated recommendations that will enhance the movement of motor vehicles as well as improve the safety and accessibility for all modes of transportation, including walking, cycling, transit.

Invermere completed a Joint Active Transportation Plan (JATP) with the Shuswap Band in 2021 that provided recommendations to enhance the experience for people walking and bicycling between and within the two communities. Although the active transportation network was assessed in a separate plan, it is recognized that the active transportation and motor vehicle networks are connected and should be considered together.

The TMP focuses on the movement of motor vehicles (cars, goods movement, transit), but, also builds off of the proposed active transportation network and the objectives of the JATP. The also looked into providing strategies and policies related to the integration of and improvements to transit, parking, electric vehicles and micromobility (i.e. e-scooters, e-bikes).
