Currently households receive weekly curbside garbage collection. From September, garbage collection will move to bi-weekly occurring on the same week as your recycling collection.

Why is this changing?

From June 2025, residents will be able to take their organics waste from their garbage cart and compost it in their organics waste cart. This will reduce waste that is being sent to landfill, also giving residents more room in their carts weekly.

If your household produces more waste than the 1 cart bi-weekly allowance, the Invermere Transfer Station is open daily for free waste drop off. Along with recycling for many items that are not accepted in your curbside recycling bin, such as glass, foam and flexible plastics.

2025 Garbage Information

Invermere Transfer Station

If unable to have your garbage out for collection, residents are encouraged to take advantage of the Invermere Transfer Station located next to the Public Works yard in Athalmer on Industrial 1 Rd.

The District started a pilot project in July at the Invermere Transfer Station where you will see the Invermere Transfer Station fully supervised and operated between set days and hours of operation.

Please visit the RDEK Website for Transfer Station hours.

Site staff will direct users to bins available for use.

This site will only be used to drop off household waste.

Furniture, appliances, contractor waste and yard waste will not be accepted at this site.

Only waste in residential bags that will fit through the bear resistant lids will be accepted.

Please contact the DOI office for more information by calling 250-342-9281.

By practising the 3Rs — Reduce, Reuse, Recycle — we can conserve resources, extend the life of our landfill, and save money.

Other Waste

Weekly garbage collection is provided to single family homes.

For waste other than household, it must be taken to the Columbia Valley Landfill site located at 1884 Windermere Loop Road. The Columbia Valley Landfill is open 7 days a week 9am – 6pm. Household garbage is free. Call the landfill at 250-342-0381. The Regional District of East Kootenay operates the landfill.

Hazardous Household Waste

For items considered hazardous waste, please keep these out of the curbside collection carts. Click here to see what hazardous household items can be accepted at the Radium Transfer Station.

Curbside Cart Repair & Replacement – Process & Fees

The District of Invermere would like to share an update on curbside cart repair, removal and replacement fees, in accordance with Waste Management Bylaw No. 1671, 2025. The following information outlines what residents can expect going forward.

Why Fees Apply

Under Sections 7 and 8 of the bylaw:

  • Residents are responsible for the actual cost of replacing a cart that is lost, stolen, or damaged through no fault of the District.
  • Residents are responsible for the actual cost of removing a bin or replacing a damaged lid.

These fees reflect the rates charged to the District by our contractor, GFL Environmental.

Current Fees- Effective June 1st 2025.

The following are the current contractor-provided rates:

  • Cart repair: up to $135.10
  • Cart replacement: approximately $200 per cart (plus tax)
  • Lid replacement: up to $135.10

Note: Fees are based on the contractor’s current pricing and may change if GFL updates their rates. The District will adjust communications and billing accordingly.

How Billing Works

  • If a repair or replacement is completed, the associated fee will be applied to your utility account.
  • The amount will appear on your next utility bill.
  • Fees vary depending on the contractor’s rate at the time of service.

Tips to Help Prevent Cart Damage

To reduce the likelihood of damage, and avoid repair or replacement fees, please keep in mind:

  • Do not overfill carts. When carts are overly full, the pressure inside can prevent the gravity lock from functioning properly. This often leads to lid damage.
  • Ensure lids close fully before collection.
  • Place carts with adequate space around them so the truck’s arm can safely lift and empty them.
  • Avoid placing heavy or prohibited items inside carts.
