Applications Being Taken for New Accessibility Advisory Committee

 In Uncategorized

Applications are now being taken for the newly-established East Kootenay Accessibility Advisory

Committee.

“As part of the new Accessible British Columbia Act local governments are required to establish

an accessibility committee, develop an accessibility plan, and create an ongoing way for the public

to provide feedback regarding accessibility,” explains RDEK Community Services Coordinator

Sandra Haley, who is leading the project on behalf of the participating local governments. In

addition to the RDEK, the participating municipalities include the City of Cranbrook, the Village of

Canal Flats and the District of Invermere.

The Advisory Committee will help the RDEK and member municipalities identify and address

accessibility barriers. Input from the Committee will guide the participating local governments in

creating an accessibility plan that considers principles like adaptability, diversity, collaboration,

self-determination, and universal design.

“By joining the Committee, you will have the opportunity to share your perspective and assist in

building local communities that are accessible to everyone. As a member of the Advisory

Committee, your insights will support the Board of Directors and Municipal Councils to make

decisions about policies, programs, and infrastructure that consider the needs of individuals with

disabilities and will foster equality and inclusivity within the communities,” adds Haley.

Applications can be filled out at engage.rdek.bc.ca/accessibility or picked up at the Columbia

Valley or Cranbrook RDEK offices. The deadline to submit applications is August 28, 2023.
