Update on Compost Site Near Off-Leash Dog Park

 In Garbage and Waste Management

We’ve heard concerns about the compost site near the off-leash dog park and want to share what’s being done:

  • The site is fenced to help reduce access.

Short-term actions:

  • The compost has been tarped and the area cleaned up.
  • We are continuing to monitor the site regularly.

Long-term solutions:

We are working with the Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK), who owns the site, to explore options for relocation, improved fencing, and better controls.

The site is located near a wildlife corridor, so we are committed to wildlife coexistence and safety for pets and people. Attractants like food waste can increase wildlife conflicts, so please help by avoiding contaminants in compost (such as pet feces, plastic bags, and other non-compostable materials). This will make the pile more manageable for dogs and reduce wildlife attractants.

We care deeply about dog safety and wildlife stewardship and appreciate your cooperation as we work toward a long-term solution.
