Flood Watch Downgraded | District of Invermere Area Updated: June 1, 2026
The BC River Forecast Centre has downgraded the Flood Watch for the East Kootenay region, including the Fairmont Hot Springs and surrounding areas, to a High Streamflow Advisory effective 11:45 AM June 1, 2026.
This is an improvement from the Flood Watch issued on May 28, 2026. A High Streamflow Advisory means river levels are elevated or may continue to rise, but major flooding is not expected. Minor flooding in low-lying areas remains possible.
What is happening
A weather system moving across the Montana, Alberta, and Saskatchewan border has brought moderate to heavy rain to the East Kootenay since the weekend. Precipitation totals have been in the 25 to 60mm range across the region. Temperatures have dropped, which has reduced snowmelt rates compared to last week. Rain is expected to continue into Tuesday, with the highest amounts along the BC and Alberta border.
What this means locally
The most serious flood risk for our area has passed, but rivers remain high and conditions are still active. Residents near waterways should continue to exercise caution.
Please remember to stay away from rivers and riverbanks, which can still be unstable, and never drive through floodwater.
Sandbag Station
The self-fill sandbag station at the Windermere Fire Hall remains available at no charge for residents who still need it.
