District of Invermere Supports Collaborative Water Stewardship on Lake Windermere and Columbia Lake
The District of Invermere acknowledges the news release issued May 20th, 2026 by ʔakisq̓knuk First Nation regarding their ongoing water stewardship work on Columbia Lake and Lake Windermere, and welcomes their commitment to evidence-based research and regional collaboration.
Lake Windermere is at the heart of what makes Invermere special. It is central to our community’s identity, our economy, and our quality of life. The District recognizes that caring for these waters is a shared responsibility, one that extends beyond municipal boundaries and requires meaningful partnership with Indigenous communities, regional governments, and all who depend on and enjoy these lakes year-round.
The District of Invermere has an ongoing relationship with ʔakisq̓knuk First Nation and is supportive of efforts to advance credible, science-based approaches to understanding and protecting our shared waters. We look forward to continued engagement as AFN’s technical work progresses and additional information becomes available.
Invermere is built around its connection to the land and water. Our community’s value proposition, balanced lifestyle, accessible recreation, environmental stewardship, and authentic community spirit, depends on the long-term health of the lakes and natural environment that surrounds us. We take that responsibility seriously and are committed to being a respectful and collaborative partner in decisions that affect our shared landscape.
“It is encouraging to see ʔakisq̓knuk First Nation investing in the kind of credible, data-driven research that will help all of us make better decisions about our lakes. Lake Windermere is one of Invermere’s most treasured assets and we recognize that caring for it is a shared responsibility. The District is committed to being a meaningful partner in that work and we are grateful for AFN’s leadership on this important issue.”
Al Miller, Mayor of the District of Invermere
