The District of Invermere is joining communities across BC and Canada by expanding curbside waste collection to include organic waste.
Compostable material currently makes up 30% of our waste that can be diverted to the new local composting facility instead of being transported to the regional landfill.
It will include more than fruit and veggie scraps! The curbside ‘green’ bin can accept yard waste and food scraps – and also pizza boxes, kitty litter, wooden cutlery and more!
You can also include food scraps that can’t usually be composted at home, such as dairy, baked goods, and meat.
District residents who currently receive curbside collection will be provided with a new bear-resistant curbside organics cart in April 2025.
The first collection for organic waste will occur on May 5th for Zone B and May 6th for Zone A.
Starting in August, garbage and recycling will be collected bi-weekly and organic waste weekly.
Organic waste will be converted into Class B compost soil that will stay locally and be used for District projects.
