New Asphalt Pump Track Coming to Mt. Nelson Athletic Park

 

Four community partners join forces to deliver major recreation upgrade in Invermere

Four community partners, the District of Invermere, the Columbia Valley Cycling Society (CVCS), Rocky Mountain School District No. 6, and the Columbia Valley Greenways Trail Alliance, are preparing to begin construction on the Mt. Nelson Pump Track Revitalization Project. The project will turn the current dirt pump track at Mt. Nelson Athletic Park into a modern asphalt track built for riders of all ages and skill levels. Construction is set to begin in late August 2026.

About the Project

The pump track at Mt. Nelson Athletic Park is currently a dirt course that has been well used by local riders for years. It will be rebuilt as a permanent, low-maintenance asphalt track designed and built by Velosolutions, a world leader in pump track construction. The revitalized pump track will also include Velosolutions Vorld App technology, a free app enabling riders to count and track lap times. Velosolutions also founded the UCI Pump Track World Championships and has built similar tracks in nearby communities such as Kimberley and Revelstoke.

The new track will be smoother, more durable, and designed to accommodate a wide range of riders, including cyclists, adaptive riders, skateboarders, inline skaters, and scooter users of all ages and abilities. It is located at Mt. Nelson Athletic Park, next to J.A. Laird Elementary School and David Thompson Secondary School, and connects directly to the Invermere Trail System. The new design “includes” two tracks beginning from a shared start zone: a smaller track for newer riders and a longer, more advanced track for those with more experience. This layout will accommodate more riders and support better flow during busy periods.

Once finished, the pump track will be a lasting community asset that supports school programs, community events, coaching clinics, and regional competitions. It will also help grow the Columbia Valley’s reputation as one of the region’s top mountain biking destinations, supporting visitation and local economic activity.

Funding

The Mt. Nelson Pump Track Revitalization Project has a total budget of approximately $620,000. To date, over $510,000 has been raised through a combination of grants, municipal investment, and community fundraising. Major funding partners include the Columbia Basin Trust, which contributed $330,000, and the Resort Municipality Initiative (RMI) Invermere-Panorama, which contributed $150,000.

An additional $36,905+ has already come in from over 15 donors including Legacy-level community donations from CVCS itself, the Sherlock Homes Real Estate Team, the Anderson Family, and Valhalla Pure Outfitters. The project partners are continuing to work together to secure the remaining funds needed to complete the project, with just over $103,000 still to be secured.

As a project partner and registered charity, the Columbia Valley Greenways Trail Alliance is leading the charitable fundraising campaign for the Mt. Nelson Pump Track Revitalization Project. Funds raised by Greenways will be used toward project costs. Eligible donations to Greenways in support of the project will receive a charitable tax receipt.

Donors are recognized at different levels depending on the size of their contribution, ranging from smaller “Friend of the Pump Track” gifts up to “Legacy” recognition starting at $5,000 and “Legacy Champion” recognition starting at $10,000. Everyone who donates helps bring this community project closer to completion.

What’s Next

Site preparation work is scheduled to begin on Monday, August 17, 2026, carried out by Kenpesq’t . a local contracting company. Construction on the new pump track is scheduled to begin in September 2026 and is expected to take approximately six weeks. The project is expected to be complete by early October 2026, giving riders in Invermere a brand-new place to ride before winter arrives.
