Curbside Cart Repair & Replacement – Process & Fees

 In Garbage and Waste Management

The District of Invermere would like to share an update on curbside cart repair, removal and replacement fees, in accordance with Waste Management Bylaw No. 1671, 2025. The following information outlines what residents can expect going forward.

Why Fees Apply

Under Sections 7 and 8 of the bylaw:

  • Residents are responsible for the actual cost of replacing a cart that is lost, stolen, or damaged through no fault of the District.
  • Residents are responsible for the actual cost of removing a bin or replacing a damaged lid.

These fees reflect the rates charged to the District by our contractor, GFL Environmental.

Current Fees- Effective June 1st 2025.

The following are the current contractor-provided rates:

  • Cart repair: up to $135.10
  • Cart replacement: approximately $200 per cart (plus tax)
  • Lid replacement: up to $135.10

Note: Fees are based on the contractor’s current pricing and may change if GFL updates their rates. The District will adjust communications and billing accordingly.

How Billing Works

  • If a repair or replacement is completed, the associated fee will be applied to your utility account.
  • The amount will appear on your next utility bill.
  • Fees vary depending on the contractor’s rate at the time of service.

Tips to Help Prevent Cart Damage

To reduce the likelihood of damage, and avoid repair or replacement fees, please keep in mind:

  • Do not overfill carts. When carts are overly full, the pressure inside can prevent the gravity lock from functioning properly. This often leads to lid damage.
  • Ensure lids close fully before collection.
  • Place carts with adequate space around them so the truck’s arm can safely lift and empty them.
  • Avoid placing heavy or prohibited items inside carts.
